Silver medal winner and badminton star PV Sindhu at the Rio Olympics will lead Indian team with the tri-color in the inauguration ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. This time the Commonwealth Games are to be held in the 2018 Gold Coast, Australia. On Friday, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had held a meeting in which it was decided that the leader of the Indian team, taking the nation’s flag in the Commonwealth Games, would be the badminton star. Sindhu made to the semi-finals of All England Championship but had to witness an unfortunate defeat last week.

The countrymen hope from Sindhu that this time they will grab the gold medal in the women’s singles as well, while further improving the earlier performance in the Commonwealth Games. This will be the first instance since the last 3 seasons of Commonwealth Games that a Badminton player will direct the Indian team in these games. Prior to this, in 2006, the silver medalist shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore led the Indian team by taking the flag at the Athens Olympics in the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne. Rathore is currently holding the responsibility of the Union Sports Minister.
During the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010, the gold medalist in the Beijing Olympics in shooting Abhinav Bindra led the Indian team. After this, during the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, Vijay Kumar, who took the silver medal in shooting at the London Olympics, got the responsibility.
